It was an experience of life time to watch the golden rays of the sun, bathing the pride of the lost city of Angkor in Northern Cambodia, the three tier pyramid like structure, one of the best preserved 9th to 15th century Khmer Empire constructions, the Angkor Wat Temple. Last March, there I was standing in front of the 154 square foot extensive archeological site in Angkor Wat watching the mystical sunrise, which was more like a spiritual experience in my entire Siem Reap tour. Well, undoubtedly Angkor Wat surrounded by approximately something around 100 temples, is one of the must see points while in Siem Reap province of Cambodia, projecting World’s largest religious monument.
I had a three-day trip in Siem Reap, and to be very honest, though am a late riser, I could not resist plan of at least one early wake up in my tour to witness the truth of the sunrise view of Angkor Wat, after earring all the hype around me about the majestic beauty of Angkor Wat sunrise.
My Early Wake Up
The sunrise that day was due at 6.15 am and I had set a Tuk Tuk driver early the last evening for an early dawn pick up from my hotel. It was 5am when we started and by 5.20 we reached near the spot, but I had to take a trail through the darkness. I had my flashlight and lenses all set with me, and I started paving my way through the forest trail until I caught the glimpse of the 65 meters tall tower of the central temple monument. Sunrise at Angkor Wat There I was, not along but with folks of other visitors busy in capturing best positions for easy snap shots. It was still dark as we stared at the constructional endeavor of King Suryavarman ii in the first half of the 12th century. The central mountain structured monument was easily visible even in those dark hours before the sunrise, which represented the mythological Mount Meru, believed to be located at the center of the Universe and the seat to Lord Vishnu. Though the complex was massive, yet since the crowd gathered was there for the sunrise, it was the Western Gate that we chose, which the main entrance was also. With the first gleam of the sunrays falling on the apex of the central tower of Angkor Wat temple, I truly feel for the purity and divinity of the sight, my best experience in the Siem Reap Vacation undoubtedly. Though it was not all, even after that spectacular sight, I had to dedicate the entire day for exploring the largest city in the World in 12th Century, Angkor.
